Monday, December 28th, 2009

According StatCounter Global Statistics, Firefox 3.5 is currently the world’s most popular web browser. It must be noted that this refers exclusively to version 3.5 of Firefox. If one had to take all versions of Firefox and Internet Explorer, one will find that the latter still has the largest market share .

Windows XP is still the most popular o/s

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

According StatCounter Global Statistics, Windows XP is still the world’s most popular operating system. This is indeed remarkable for an o/s which is 8 years old! On the other hand this is not good news for Microsoft because despite all the hype surrouning Windows 7, their latest o/s still lags behind XP, Vista and MacOS X.

DirectX 11

Friday, December 18th, 2009

A lot of people still don’t know that Windows 7 ships with a new version of DirectX, which is now in its 11th incarnation. Most probably the reason behind this lack of awarness is the fact that until recently there were no graphic chipsets which took advantage of this latest technology. However, recently ATI released the Radeon™ HD 5700 which is the first GPU which fully supports DirectX 11. On the other hand Nvidia is a bit late this time and will release a new GeForce which supports DirectX 11 in Q1 2010.

Domain names in non-Latin alphabets

Saturday, December 12th, 2009

On the 10th of December, EURid (registrar of the .eu domain) has officialy opened registration for domains in Greek and Cyrillic alphabets. Of course the former applies to Greek speaking users only but the latter applies to a number of related (but distinct) languages such as Russian, Bulgarian, Macedonian, Serbian, Ukranian and other Cyrillic based languages. It must be noted that for the time being only the labels on the left of the domain name (that is left to .com, .net, etc …) can be registered in non-Latin alphabets; the possibility to also register the top-level domain (like the country codes) will be added later.

For a list of registrars who can register .eu domains (in all alphabets) click here:

Playstation is 15 years old

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

The 3rd of December marked the 15th birthday of the Playstation. In fact the original Playstation (PSX), was released in Japan on December the 3rd, 1994. In the rest of the world it was released one year later and it was a complete success wherever it was released. Although the specs of the original machine are of course inferior when compared to the latest incarnation (the PS 3), the advantage of this is the possibility to have it emulated on other platforms including Windows. Those of you who are still interested in the machine that started it all will find the following two links useful.
