What’s HD Radio?

Friday, May 29th, 2009

Many people have heared about HDTV but few know that we have HD Radio too. So what is HD Radio? According to HDRadio.com “It’s the most significant advancement in radio broadcasting since the introduction of FM stereo more than 50 years ago. HD Radio technology enables AM and FM radio stations to broadcast their programs digitally – a tremendous technological leap from the analog broadcasts of the past.” Some of the most important features of this technology are FM stations with CD-quality sound, AM stations with FM-quality sound and Real-time artist and song IDs.

Using GetRight for downloads

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

There are many who will surely remember that way back in the mid-1990s one could download files which were no bigger than 5Mb and I referring to whole programs such as web browsers. Today many programs come packaged in much bigger setup files and the connection speed has not increased for those living in developing nations. If that is the case for your Internet connection you can download and install GetRight, an essential utility which will let you download files in chunks. This means that you can start downloading a file today, pause the download at any point and resume the download the following day without having to restart from the beginning. The latter is also necessary for interrupted downloads (when you get disconnected or the Internet packets are lost in cyberspace!).

Have you ever been surfing the Internet and opened a number of different Internet Explorer or Firefox windows? This can happen many times and after some time one will realise that there is the need to minimise all windows because one might need to access an icon on the desktop! There is no need to minimise all windows one by one since if one holds down the Windows key and presses M, all open programs will be minimised.

1.6 TeraBytes on a single disc

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

Australian researchers from Swinburne University of Technology are developing a technology which will permit the the recording of up to 1.6 TeraBytes on a single optical disc. It seems that Samsung are interested in this new technology and so far it is the only company who is working closely with the research team so that in the future they can commercialise a drive which will be able to read and write discs using this new technology.

New Atom to power future Netbooks

Sunday, May 24th, 2009

Intel released information about the next generation of Atom processors (the Atom range of CPUs power most of today’s net-books). The new generation will incorporate a memory controller and a grahics processor. This is good news for most consumers because this will make it possible for manufacturers to release cheaper netbooks. However, this is bad news for power savvy users who were hoping that in the future many netbooks would come with nVidia powered graphics.

Google Chrome

Saturday, May 23rd, 2009

Although a lot of people associate Google with their popular search-engine, only a small percentage of net surfers use (or have even heared) about Chrome, their web-browser. This browser is very minimalistic but at the same time very polished so it is perfect for fast web-browsing. The latest stable release is 2.0.172.28 but those who are more adventerous can download the latest beta release which is 2.0.181.1 Beta.
